The cast includes some of the brightest young actors in the metroplex…and soon-to-be in the country. I feel so blessed to have attracted these folks. They’re fun to work with. They’re eager to deliver killer performances. And they have sensational chemistry.

If you’ve been toying with the idea to write or produce your own play, JUST DO IT. The only things I regret are the things that for some reason I DIDN’T do.

Writing, producing and directing are all such amazing experiences. I’ve written about 35 - 40 screenplays; which means that I’ve got tons of material for my next stage production. I’m thinking of doing a script I wrote 3 years ago called “Moxie’s Song”. It’s a hip hop story too.

The Comedy Gym Auditions

If you're a comic (or you know one)

Audition for The Comedy Gym
a hot, new "clean" comedy show
produced by Fran Harris Entertainment.

AUDITIONS
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
5 - 6 pm
Po Bill's Cafe (some of the best soul food in Dallas)
2933 Commerce St. (east of Downtown Dallas)
Dallas, TX 75226
(214) 741-6601

FIRST SHOW
Friday, June 12, 2009
8:00 pm (also at Po Bill's)
***and it is a BRINGER (at least 2 peeps)

Spread the word.
Come, be funny and get booked
so we can say, 'we knew you when'

***This is a TV show,
you will be required to sign
releases...

‘Theatre Camp sets Final Auditions for Dreamgirls’

Shreveport/Bossier City, LA—Mahogany Ensemble Theatre in partnership with the Bossier Arts Council will hold final auditions for its summer arts program Camp Aspire youth production of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. The film had its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize: U.S. Documentary. The deal was announced jointly by Howard Cohen, Co-President of Roadside Attractions, Mickey Liddell of Liddell Entertainment and Michael Lombardo, President, Programming Group and West Coast Operations, HBO. Roadside plans to release the film domestically this fall. Lionsgate will handle home video and other domestic ancillary rights and HBO will retain pay cable rights and will broadcast the film in their traditional pay TV window.

An expose of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, "Good Hair" visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Director Jeff Stilson follows Chris Rock on this raucous adventure after Rock's daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" Celebrities such as Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question.

"I'm very happy to be working with the good people at Roadside Attractions. I loved the job they did with 'Super Size Me' and hope we can have similar success." says Chris Rock.

"Chris has been part of the HBO family for more than 15 years. We were thrilled to support his vision in making 'Good Hair' and we hope it reaches the widest audience," says Michael Lombardo, President, Programming Group and West Coast Operations, HBO.

"Chris Rock has always been able to come at everyday topics from a completely fresh perspective. His ability to mix incisive social commentary with huge laughs, I believe, makes him this generation's answer to Mark Twain," adds Howard Cohen, Co-President, Roadside Attractions. "'Good Hair' is revelatory, provocative, thoroughly-researched and, most importantly, just funny as hell."

The film was represented by ICM and the deal negotiated by ICM, Michael Lombardo, President, Programming and West Coast Operations, and Glenn Whitehead, Executive Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs on behalf of HBO, Howard Cohen on behalf of Roadside Attractions and Robb Klein of Sheppard Mullin on behalf of Liddell Entertainment. "Good Hair" is an HBO Films presentation of a Zahrlo production, an Urban Romances production. Produced by Chris Rock, Nelson George, Kevin O'Donnell and Jenny Hunter. Directed by Jeff Stilson. Written by Chris Rock, Jeff Stilson, Lance Crouther, and Chuck Sklar.

Forest Whitaker to Star in Family Wedding Picture

Forest Whitaker will join America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty") and Carlos Mencia (Comedy Central) in an untitled family wedding project for Fox Searchlight. The raid, which occurs after a tip by a single informant, targets among others Dee, a single mother of four with no prior drug charges (excellently played by newcomer Nicole Beharie). When the defendant assigned to her case tries to pressure her into a guilty plea in exchange for a 10-year suspended sentence, Dee refuses, rightly insisting that she has done no wrong. But with the vast majority of the prosecuted taking plea deals, even Dee’s mother (Alfre Woodard) thinks she’s a fool. Dee’s heroic defiance soon wins acolytes in ACLU lawyer David Cohen (Tim Blake Nelson) and his assistant, Byron Hill (Malcolm Barrett). The Yankee lawyers team up with local consul Sam Conroy (Will Patton), a gun-toting Texan battling his own past racist demons, building their case against Calvin Beckett (Michael O’Keefe), the villainous D.A. The film’s core message of the fight against injustice rings loud, and is underscored by powerful performances.

"American Violet dramatizes (the) case, and does so in a way that will leave audiences applauding in their seats -- and wondering how much of the film is true."
-Jonathan Curiel, San Francisco Chronicle

Showtimes: TBA

‘Theatre Summer Camp set Audition for Dreamgirls’

Shreveport/Bossier City, LA—Mahogany Ensemble Theatre in partnership with the Bossier Arts Council will hold auditions for its summer arts program Camp Aspire youth production of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. She will also be singing jazz standards well known to her fans from her years of performing in the Shreveport area. Shreveport composer Tom Hundemer and composer Philippe Lévesque from Montreal will be signing brand new symphonic arrangements commissioned for this special occasion. A strong legacy from Freddie and Annette's lives is the giving of encouragement, instruction & opportunities to perform to developing musical artists. This concert will continue that legacy - being an occasion to showcase some of this area's up and coming musical talent such as mezzo-soprano Deedra Johnson and cellist Alexis Barnett . What an opportunity for these young artists to be featured in such a way! Morton, Reverend Otis Moss, Ruby Dee, Thurbert Baker and others underscore a new era in American life in Gil Robertson's new anthology, Family Affair: What It Means To Be African American Today.

Robertson, a veteran lifestyle journalist/editor explores “identity” within the African American community in the new millennium. In Family Affair—the follow up to his bestselling 2006 anthology Not in My Family: AIDS in the African American Community- Robinson cleaves thought the physical, social, political and historical characteristics that have come to define the African-American community and offers up a multitude of perspectives on how to embrace a more positive future.

Through personal stories and essays by contributors representing various elements of the black community, the book delves into an identity that's been thrown off course due to a number of external and internal factors. Family Affair is divided into five sections representing the key features that influence the African American identity: Family, Culture, Relationships, Community and Self.

Each section features religious leaders, institutional leaders, elected officials, and celebrities from the worlds of music, film and broadcasting – as well as plenty of ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Family Affair offers revelations and insights on topics that the majority of African American only talk about in secret.

For more info: www.familyaffairbook.com.

NBC 2009 Press Day

"Southland" (NBC), "The Fashion Show" (Bravo), and "America's Got Talent" (NBC) are a few of the shows that were introduced at a recent press day for NBC Universal's 2009 summer releases. Touting "This Is The Time," the network's presentation included new programming announcements, as well as the unveiling of a new brand strategy. The network's new programming line-up includes a late night variety show with Mo'Nique, reality docudramas, news programs, returning series and several mega-specials.

"Given the historic change our country has experienced, this is the perfect time for BET Networks to re-examine where we are as a company and what we can be for our audience," said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BET Networks. "As the #1 African American media company in the world, we have a unique opportunity to make the world of our audience better and provide them with quality entertainment that speaks to where they are in their lives and where they want to go. BET's reinvigorated approach is built on supporting families, embracing and encouraging their dreams, focusing on the issues that are important to them and presenting the freshest talent and entertainment."

"Coming off a hugely successful first quarter, with viewership on BET up 10% and BET.com page views up 77%, we're confident that our new programming line-up and brand strategy will allow us to build on our strong momentum," said Scott Mills, President and Chief Operating Officer, BET Networks. "We're also extremely excited about the launch of our new network, CENTRIC, which is designed for, focused on and central to the African American adult experience."

CENTRIC will appeal to an older and more affluent audience. BET, with its reality shows, movies and music videos, primarily draws a teenage and young adult audience. There is no word on the fate of BET J, a small music-oriented offshoot of the network, which would be affected by the formation of CENTRIC.

"In this ever-cluttered media environment, BET brings our advertising partners closer to the African American consumer than any other media company," said Louis Carr, President of Broadcast Media Sales, BET Networks. "Our research has shown us what our viewers expect and what they want from us, and we're responding by giving them the content that reflects and is relevant to who they are, is respectful of what they want to be, and elevates them to where they want to go. We'll be offering exciting new programming that will give our partners an unprecedented, powerful way to connect with these consumers - young trendsetters, community organizers and trustees, and hard-working, multi-generational families."

The upfront presentation featured special appearances by Mary J. Blige, Mo'Nique, Anita Baker, Monica, MC Lyte, Mario Van Peebles, and Jonathan Smith.

The State of Minority Business in Shreveport-Bossier City, LA

Click here for demographics and a report called The State of Minority Business in Shreveport-Bossier City, LA.

FOX Diversity 2009 Writers Initiative Seeks Script Submissions

The deadline for FOX Diversity's Writers Initiative is May 3rd.
